VMware ESXi is the hypervisor created by VMware that allows you to virtualize machines for free.
The free version (ESXi 8.0U3e) developed by Broadcom is fully functional and already includes a serial number.
Furthermore, this free Broadcom license (for version 8.0U3e) never expires.
Previously, for older versions (developed by VMware), it was a 60-day trial version.
Then, the serial number obtained for free from the VMware website allowed you to use ESXi indefinitely, but with limited features.
Important : in February 2024, following Broadcom's acquisition of VMware, the free version of VMware ESXi no longer existed.
However, since April 2025, Broadcom has made "VMware ESXi 8.0U3e" free.
Source : VMware ESXi 8.0 Update 3e now available as a Free Hypervisor - Broadcom.
Then, you are free to buy a VMware vSphere license to create a complete and flexible virtual infrastructure if you combine several VMware ESXi hypervisors which can be managed centrally via VMware vCenter Server (VCSA).
