Hyper-V is a hypervisor available on Windows Server which will allow you to consolidate your servers by considerably reducing the number of physical servers required by virtualizing them.

To get started, you will learn how to virtualize your first virtual machines with Hyper-V.
For this, Microsoft offers 2 generations :

  • generation 1 : LEGACY BIOS, RemoteFX support (graphics performance), IDE disk controller support, ...
  • generation 2 : firmware (EFI), SCSI disk controller only, ...

Then, you will learn how to improve the graphics and/or I/O performance (for storage) of your virtual machines.

In order to ensure the high availability of your Hyper-V virtual infrastructure, you will learn :

  • how to automatically replicate virtual machines in a secure way between 2 Hyper-V hypervisors
  • how to create a cluster to automatically switch to a disaster recovery (DR) environment in the event of a production environment crash
  • how to hot migrate virtual machines from one server to another to better use the resources of your Hyper-V hypervisors

Once you've learned all of this, you can go further :

  • by creating checkpoints (snapshots) to quickly restore a virtual machine to a previous state
  • by managing the transfer of files between the Hyper-V server and your virtual machines
  • by exporting and importing virtual machines
  • by manually creating virtual hard disks

Finally, you will find :

  • an article detailing all the settings available for the Hyper-V hypervisor, Gen 1 and Gen 2 virtual machines
  • a tutorial explaining how to manage the network access of your virtual machines : types of virtual switches, improvement of network performance (QoS, MPIO, NIC Teaming, ...), ...

Note : 5 additional Hyper-V tutorials can be found on our "InformatiWeb.net" website as they target the client version of Windows and the free Hyper-V server for individuals :

  • Hyper-V - Coexistence with VirtualBox or VMware Workstation
  • Enable the Hyper-V feature on Windows 8, 8.1 and 10
  • Install Hyper-V on the Home edition of Windows 8, 8.1, 10 and 11
  • Hyper-V 2012 Standalone - Install and config (free)
  • Windows 10 / 11 - Quick creation of VMs on Hyper-V

Last course update for Windows Server 2016 performed on 05/14/2022.
