Failover clusters

Clusters

Failover clusters group together multiple servers and provide high availability for different services (including Hyper-V).

Indeed, when you create a failover cluster :

  • services are monitored to ensure they are working properly
  • failing services are automatically restarted (if possible) or moved to another server in the cluster otherwise
  • services can also be moved manually or automatically (in the event of a server failure, for example)

When you cluster a service (or cluster role), you can also use a cluster shared volume (more known as CSV for Cluster Shared Volume) which will be accessible by all the nodes of the cluster.

Note that failover clusters also provide high availability for the virtual machines created with Microsoft Hyper-V.
