DNS server

DNS servers are omnipresent in the world and make it possible to resolve domain names into IP addresses (and vice versa via reverse lookup zones).

In companies, DNS servers are widely used for the management of internal domain names associated with different services (web server, file server, RDS server, ...).
Companies using servers with Windows Server very often use the DNS server, since Active Directory domain services notably require a local DNS server.

With Windows Server DNS servers, you can :

  • point domain names to IP addresses or to existing domain names (in other words : aliases) using the forward lookup zones
  • do the opposite : point IP addresses to domain names using reverse lookup zones
  • enable transparent search of NETBIOS names from DNS using WINS and WINS-R search
  • and more
