Windows Deployment Services (WDS) is the successor of RIS (Remote Installation Service) and allows system administrators to quickly deploy Windows to many computers over the network.
The advantage is that it's enough to start computers on the network once so that Windows is deployed on them and they are automatically linked to your Active Directory.
Thanks to the WIM format (Windows Imaging Format) that Microsoft uses since Windows Vista, you can very easily add the installation images of Windows Vista, 7, 8, ...
Note that Windows XP can also be deployed via WDS (although this Windows version is now obsolete) by capturing the installation generalized with sysprep beforehand.
