Vim is a command line text editor available on Linux and usable in a terminal or over a connection secured by SSH.
Vim is very similar to Vi, because it's an improved version of Vi.

As Vi, it has different modes, but you will use especially :

  • the normal mode : to read a text file.
  • the commands mode : to type commands. For example : a search (/word to search), save the file (:w), save and exit (:wq), ...
  • the insert mode : to edit the file. For example : change sentences, delete characters or lines, ...

In total, there are 6 different modes : Normal mode, Insert mode, Command-line mode, Visual mode, Selection mode and Ex mode.

Then, Vim supports :

  • Syntax Highlighting
  • Command History
  • Unicode
  • etc.

If you are interested in adding plugins (or extensions) in Vim, visit "Vim Awesome" which lists a series of plugin for this text editor.
