IIS (Internet Information Services) is the Microsoft's web server available as a role on Windows Server and as a feature on client versions of Windows.
Although IIS is partly used to host dynamic websites developed in ASP/ASP.NET (or less often in PHP, even if it's possible), IIS is mainly used as a dependency for other services, such as : RDS for its web portal, the certification authority to obtain certificates from a web interface or any other service (or third-party software) offering a web interface or using the HTTP or HTTPS protocol.
IIS is available from Windows NT and each version of Windows (or its server version) has a different version of IIS and therefore different features.
For example, support for the new HTTP/2 protocol is only available from version 10 of IIS on Windows Server 2016 and Windows 10.
